Microsoft picks Infosys for tech support

Microsoft has outsourced its internal tech support to Indian technology services firm Infosys, the companies have announced.

The move was first exposed in an Infosys press release announcing a three-year deal to “manage internal IT services for Microsoft worldwide” and later on confirmed by the US software massive.

“As part of this managed services agreement, Infosys will streamline completion processes, simplify support and service, while at the same time lowering the venture costs through the use of the latest Microsoft solutions such as Windows 7,” Infosys said in a announcement.

No financial or other terms of the contract were released. But Microsoft said that it would still keep planned functions in its internal IT management and was engaging Infosys to combine service previously provided by a variety of outside vendors.

The move will see Infosys providing help desk support for 450 Microsoft locations international as Microsoft looks to slash costs by outsourcing jobs to the Indian tech services firm.

"The completely integrated solution urbanized by Infosys will help us improve how we bring customer computing services to our interior workers and partners while leveraging the novelty and investments we make in mounting new technologies," said Jim DuBois, Microsoft's general manager of service management.

Surprise in Intel 1Q: Corporate PC spending up

SAN FRANCISCO — Intel Corp. executive speak the chip maker's first-quarter results exposed a astonishing and heartening trend: Companies are finally preliminary to upgrade their staff laptops.

That's significant because corporate spending on personal computers has been one of the last parts of the technology world to melt out as companies unlock budgets solid during the recession.

But there's a grasp, according to Intel CEO Paul Otellini: Many companies are trade PCs again because it's simply less luxurious than execution on to older machines that want recurrent maintenance. He said many clients were buying computers with older Intel chips, which are less money-spinning for the company than the newer products.

"I'm still not going to go out on a member, and our clients aren't going to go out on a member, and say there's a corporate revive snapback cycle," he said. "People are buying things to replace older machines because it's just cheaper."

Still, that dynamic was input in helping Intel's net profits almost quadruple in the most recent quarter when compared with last year.

Intel became the first main technology company to report earnings for the first quarter when it said after the market closed Tuesday that it earned $2.4 billion, or 43 cents per share, in the first three months of 2009.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters were expecting profit of 38 cents per share.

In the same time last year, Intel earned $629 million, or 11 cents per share. At the time Intel was muddling through the slump, but Otellini predicted that personal computer sales had "bottomed out" — an early predict that proved true.

Intel's revenue in the latest period jumped 44 percent to $10.3 billion, ahead of analysts' forecast for $9.8 billion.

The company also raised its forecast for a key performance measurement. Intel now predicts a gross profit margin of 62 percent to 66 percent of revenue in 2010, up from its previous guidance of 58 percent to 64 percent of revenue.

And Intel said it expects to employ about 1,000 people this year all-inclusive. Intel at present has 79,900 employees, down from 82,500 a year ago.

Intel shares rose 23 cents, 1 percent, to close at $22.77 before the earnings report. In after-hours trading the shares jumped 90 cents, nearly 4 percent, to $23.67.

Intel's consequences might be an early preview of a fit quarter for the technology industry, because many kinds of suppliers would profit if large companies are starting to use up more money on computers and other equipment.

During the most horrible of the recession, the computer industry was propped up by consumer spending, typically on heavily inexpensive computers and "netbooks" — modest laptops used for surfing the Internet. Still, the slump was the PC industries most horrible in nearly a decade.

Late last year, corporations picked up their spending on their essential back-end computers. Sales of computer servers — the behind-the-scenes computers that run Web sites and chomp data for companies — rose at the two biggest server makers, Hewlett-Packard Co. and IBM Corp.

That trend has helped raise Intel and competitor Advanced Micro Devices Inc. because server processors are amongst their most profitable products.

Apple’s iPad Screens will be made by Samsung

Apple’s only one of its kind identities in the handheld and the PC market was shaped by its approach of doing everything by itself without depending on others. But there are a small number of things that can’t be complete on their own. For example, in order to plan new software or produce a special part they have to depend on others. Apple needs support particularly in creation iPad’s LCD screens. Till now the TFT-LCD panels for Apple’s tablet PC were complete by the LG displays only. But the ball is not in their court now. They are not the only suppliers of such parts.

Apple may have required some selection or those they can’t make stuff with the LG screens. So only the Cupertino body had made conformity with Samsung. In-plane switching (IPS) technology is used in LG’s panel, while Samsung uses SPVA (Supper Patterned Vertical Alignment) technique in developed the iPad displays.

The cause behind this deal is indefinite, Digitimes doesn’t reveal it. The
supplier’s obligation like scratch confrontation, for the tablet PC, is pleased by both the companies. LG has previously shipped a charge share of its LCDs, so it is unclear whether Apple needs more panels.

According to the sources of Digitimes, LG has shipped around 300,000 to 400,000 iPad screens in February. This is a great shape, but it was surpassed during March. just about 500,000 iPad screens were shipped by LG in March. Samsung has a huge challenge in front of them. They have to accomplish Apple’s anticipation by surpassing this number. The users are wondering about Apple’s plans for the future, because they have two suppliers now as an alternative of the one they already had.

unluckily, it is not easy to find out what will occur but Apple won’t wait to reveal some new versions of its schedule.

Google Polishes Google Apps…

Google’s business campus on April 12 hosted over 400 CIOs and other IT pros from in the region of the world for the opening environment cloud computing seminar. The hunt massive used the occasion to appetizer the quicker, more fully-featured, HTML5-powered Google Docs that’s coming soon.

If the official blog is to be supposed, the changes coming to Google Docs are the effect of Google realizing that sure features just weren’t likely on their obtainable code infrastructure. By tearing out that infrastructure and rebuilding it, Google Docs can influence new technology to add to act and put up out new features quicker than ever.

For Google’s word processor, the new features are mainly built around group effort: the new Google Docs engine enables real-time character-by-character edits and the spreadsheet editor’s sidebar chat function. It’s also receiving improved document formatting, including real limits and tab stops better image plan, and better import/export loyalty.

Spreadsheets are getting a speed boost in addition to new features like cell editing, auto-complete, drag-and-drop columns, and simpler navigation between sheets.

Google has also released a standalone drawing editor, such that users can collaborate on charts, diagrams, or any other graphic and view the created files in the document list. It’s also possible to drop the shaped drawings directly into a Google document using their web clipboard tool.

The bad news that comes with this widespread Google Docs alteration is that the new editors don’t support Gears for offline access, though Google does say they hope to bring it back in the indistinct future.

For right now, the drawing tool be supposed to be available to all Google Docs users, with preview versions of the new editors coming out in the next few days.

Google typically rolls out new features and technologies in small chunks. A main upgrade like this merits a lot of attention – and I’m sure their rivals in Redmond are keeping very, very close tabs on the new Google Docs — particularly as Microsoft Office 2010 and Office Web near launch. Stay tuned.

10 reasons why a netbook is better than an iPad

It does not sprint desktop apps. It does not in shape into your pocket. It does not smooth multitask... until this falls, at least. on the other hand, if you are looking for a machine that would be correct at home in a SciFi motion picture, the iPad is it. Not only that, but it has an approximately SciFi like property of being completely receptive, with a ludicrously long battery life that net books or Windows-based tablets at present cannot touch. I was able to analysis out the $499, 16GB iPad thanks to the Mines bookstore, who has quite a few units in stock. All in all, it is a beautiful fresh device.

To chase away rumors and corroborate everyone's most ordinary apprehension, the iPad is certainly clumsily sized for moving around, up till now its screen is dazzling, tack-sharp, and wealthy sufficient for an pleasant photo-viewing knowledge. Battery life in fact does calculate up to the quite insane ten hour advertised length, as long as all ten of those hours are not exhausted playing HD video, with all audio approaching from side to side the iPad's speaker at full flash. Speaking of which, the iPad's auditory output exceeds the volume of some laptops that I have used, something that confuses roommates to no end. As with other Apple devices, audio out is clean and, of require be, ear-splittingly earsplitting. Zooming out a bit, the touch screen is approachable (as is the device as a whole 99 % of the time) and the iPad as a complete feels dependable.

One thing to note is that WiFi doesn't have remarkable reception, though it's on par with the iPhone and the iPod touch. The piece of equipment also seems to misplace signal all once in a short time for no obvious reason. optimistically this will obtain fixed in iPhone OS 3.2.1 (or something close to it).

For those wondering whether he iPad will sprint Word, Excel or Mathematic, the reply for these (at least right now) is no, since the iPad is a large iPod touch, not a small Mac. The advantage is that, thanks to a wealthy set of Apple-provided APIs (Application indoctrination Interfaces), iPad applications are abundant, gorgeous, contemptible and optimized for working on the iPad, something that mainstream-OS tablets can't bout. That said, iPhone apps other than games look absolute unattractive when exaggerated by a issue of two so come even close to appropriate the iPad's high-resolution display.

in a minute keep in mind that the only request that you can run in the background on the iPad correct now is the iPod request; Pandora shuts down the second you hit the Home button. This subject, which is a lot more prophetic with a device that's the mass of a netbook somewhat than a cell phone, will be solved in the fall-release iPhone OS 4.0. For now multifunction apps (like an IM consumer that builds in a Safari window and a Twitter stream) will have to do.

One benefit of the iPad right now is that developers are on miniature release cycles; bugs are establish and corrected rapidly. That said, there are still figures of bugs to be worked out, since iPad-native applications work rather in a different way from a user interface perspective against their iPhone counterparts. One attractive omission to the quick-release-cycle rule is Apple itself; it seems that their iWork iPad suite absolutely mangles credentials and presentations imported from, or exported to, the desktop versions of the correct same applications. No explanation has been accessible for this deviation, though it will optimistically get set sooner rather than later.

In sum, the iPad is very grown-up first-generation manufactured goods, though if you're on the barrier it's a first-class idea to hang around until the iPhone OS update. For those who must have a confident desktop application, wait. If you desire a one hundred % steady application base, wait. on the other hand, if you desire a rather feature-rich internet tablet (and then some) with plenty of eye candy, fluid responsiveness and alien-technology battery life, the iPad is a first-class buy. If you desire to try the iPad for yourself, the Mines bookstore has a demo tape table out. I would recommend checking out the WetherBug and Blackboard Mobile Learn applications.

Let us seem at some of aspects of mobile computing where the iPad might have an edge over netbooks:

1. 10 hour battery life – Yes, it in fact does have a battery life this large, with several different tests confirming it, while actually playing video for a considerable portion of the time. However, its battery is not detachable or replaceable; though just like a netbook or laptop it will provide up one day. You will need to pay $100 to get the battery replaced (technically, you will get a new battery in a new iPad, with your old tablet having to be returned – causing all sorts of data backup headaches)
2. Accerelometer/GPS/magenetometer – although these features may not in fact be an benefit, it will allow applications to offer some very unique functionality, such as UI auto-rotate, turn-by-turn navigation, location-aware search and networking, and much more.
3. 3G – accessible in the higher-end iPads, this will provide users great data/voice connectivity and move speeds, only useful if you have 3G networks in your area.
4. Touch-screen – Though not really an advantage, those looking for it will find to be receptive and a delight to use on the iPad. However, while some may consider a touchscreen to be an intuitive input process, the ease and tactile comfort provided by a keyboard (yes, even a netbook’s) and the accuracy of a mouse cannot be underestimated. Some functions on the other hand, like drawing or writing directly by hand. Some netbooks on the other hand, come with touch-screens.
5. Boot-up time – The iPad, with a dramatic 30 day sleep/standby time, will switch on almost instantaneously whenever you want it to. All netbooks have to boot-up on the other hand. But to be fair, quite a few netbooks offer a characteristic that is variously called “Always-ON”, “Express Gate”, and many other things by dissimilar manufacturers, which allows you to access your mail, browser, and some of your media before and while your computer boots-up.

So, is the iPad really for you? Do you sense that it is more useful? Do let us know what you think...
